As we’ve entered the open source era, we’ve also entered the open fonts era. With literally thousands of free fonts available online, virtually any style or look you hope to achieve can be accomplished with a simple download or two. But which style is right for your project?

In order to make sense of the slew of options, it’s important to understand the classic fonts of traditional typesetting. The 10 “greats”, as I call them, represent the major movements in typeface design from Gutenberg to the present.
