Talk at PHP North West 2017 (English - UK)

We all know those conference talks that bleat on about doing the right thing at the right time. This talk aims to reveal some of the anti-best practices to illustrate how some installations of MySQL are doomed from day 0. From infrastructure choice to queries and everything in between deserves special attention if you really want to fail fast.

Some really useful info that I look forward to putting into practice, well presented and humorous too!

The humour in this talk gave it an edge that meant the content didn't feel dry when at times it was about underlying technical aspects of MySQL.

Loved it! Some great takeaways and things to check myself now!

Expected dry facts, but got really interested thanks to humorous parts. On few slides I was missing, if it was good practice or bad one. Maybe using colors like red/green would make it more obvious. Otherwise I really enjoyed it. Thanks.

The start of the talk was a little slow, but Andrew quickly recovered and managed to deliver what could have been very dry topic on db config in a amusing manner. The to-and-fro between the "Message Queue" / "Not A Message Queue" worked very well.

Enjoyed the delivery of this talk and contained some great tips. A few more "Do it this way instead" points might be handy.

Amazing talk! Lots of great advice given in a funny and easy to digest way. The chat with the sad CEO on Skype bit had me laughing out loud, that was brilliant! :D :D :D

It was often entertaining and packed with lots of info that, depending on your role, would be really useful.

However, turning up late, blaming it on a heavy night drinking, then plugging your company sadly does not give a good impression for the company.

Also, the talk description makes it clear that there was to be some infrastructure-based content and some developer-based content; in practice, it was almost all infrastructure content, and the stuff that affects me as a dev started with less than ten minutes to go to the end of the talk. I would have rather seen a 50-50 split, but in practice I didn't actually get much that will affect my dev role.

Overall I thought the content was good, and I did mostly enjoy the delivery of the second half; but for me the whole turning up late, and clearly still being impaired by drinking the night before, isn't really what I'd expect to see out of a conference talk – this for me made the first half of the talk cringeworthy.
