PHP in 2017

Rasmus Lerdorf (30.Sep.2017 at 09:45, 50 min)
Keynote at PHP North West 2017 (English - UK)

Rating: 5 of 5

PHP has been around since the beginning of the Web. It has shaped and influenced many of the sites and web technologies we use every day. The SQL LIMIT clause came out of the PHP project, for example. Now, getting close to its 25th birthday, can it still make an impact?

Great talk about historical PHP and how it's moving forward. I love the sound of the refinements and performance improvements in PHP 7.2 and Phan is going to be fun to experiment with.

Such a great talk. Really really informative run through what's coming out in 7.2 and beyond, and I LOVED the easy to follow examples of opcode caching optimisations. Enjoyed the history intro too. Thanks for all the graphs and stats on CO2 savings - that gives us all a great argument to go back with to our business owners and badger them about upgrading to 7! :)

Very well prepared and structured talk, and delivered without a glitch!

A great opening keynote.
I really liked how simplified Rasmus's explanations were for some complicated areas like JIT. Lot's of things to think about and to look forward to for 7.2, 7.3 and beyond.

Really interesting, relatively in depth but easy to understand concepts exposed throughout the talk. It really makes a point, and point out that legacy code will definitely benefit from the coming improvements.

Great content, great execution, all perfect for me!

Interesting to learn about PHP7.2 and beyond, especially the optimisations.

Also definitely going to look at phan.

Really good to see early versions of php and a nice reminder of how far php has progressed.

It's great to see that php was the first major programming language to have security features right in its core.

Would be nice for everyone to upgrade to php7

Really applicable opening keynote covering the history of PHP and what's to come in the future, amongst other things. Can't think of anyone more appropriate to have given a talk of this content.

Good talk, a bit of interesting history and most importantly new features in PHP 7.2 and 7.3
Good to know that PHP is still improving.
Interesting info about Phan, JIT and Vespa.
Just one thing could be improved: There could be more about how we developers can help to improve PHP, and less how we developers write bad code.

While some complex topics such as Dead Code Elimination were covered, the style, pacing and slides made it very easy to grasp some of the new features in PHP 7.2 and even 7.3.

A great way to kick off the conference!

What better way to stay updated on new developments in PHP than to listen to Rasmus talking about it. Got some really good information about this talk on the new 7.2 and 7.3 optimizations as well as Vespa. Thanks!

Quality talk from the guy who started it all. Was most interested to have learned some of how PHP came about in the early days, but also interesting to see some new optimisations. I think a bit of extra info for those less familiar with how PHP core works would have been useful - i.e. how do these new features come about, who decides what goes where. That's just a request for the next one though!
